Experiences in Yoga with Shireen
After Shireen's class , I feel like I have had a massage and a latte; my body is relaxed, my movement is more fluid and I also feel focused and clear. She emphasizes the connection to the breath and offers subtle yet important adjustments to the postures that help me recognize alignment. I have learned so much about my own body from her teaching; she is understanding and encouraging. During this pandemic, I especially value her calm, loving presentation. After class, I feel connected back to the part of me that is resilient and capable, because the breathing and the poses brought me back into the present moment and to my center. During these days, the benefits of yoga are essential. Shireen understands this and her classes are a point of physical and mental unity taught with kindness and a depth of knowledge and compassion.
I always look forward to Shireen's class. Shireen is a true teacher, each class builds toward a physical lesson that, only by the end of the class, becomes clear, physically and spiritually. Shireen is an inventive and creative teacher, using language to explain the most complex of postures. During this period of Zooming yoga, I have come to rely on her clear instructions and her ability to create an online community in our troubled time.
Three+ years ago, my first-ever yoga class was with Shireen. After my second class she said something about my being in touch with my body ... it didn’t matter exactly what she said. What mattered was that she, the teacher, actually saw me: a nervous, beginning student. And she continues to *see* each of us and address our Individual strengths and needs. She is kind, loving, but not cloying. She clearly incorporates understanding of the alignment (and function) of body parts — and thus gives me the knowledge to take best care of my active-but-aging structure. At 75, I am in better shape than I was years ago. And I thank you Shireen.
You ARE different: you are unusual in your ability to be gentle yet firm as a teacher; you are unusual in the close attention you pay to each of your students and the affection you administer; you are different in the ways you so beautifully articulate how yoga fits the body, the mind, the spirit; you are different in your splendid body that can do miraculous things that some of us aging hippies used to dream of; you are different in your ardent beliefs well-expressed and not repressed.
I love Shireen’s warm, straightforward approach, through her clear, precise cueing toward better alignment, to elegantly integrating the physical and emotional aspects of yoga.
Shireen, being my yoga teacher during these very difficult times has been very helpful at a physical, emotional and spiritual level and, as well, very enjoyable. On the mat I appreciate your sensitivity to your students needs and abilities while challenging all of us to gradually do better. Off the mat, your thought provoking deep felt thoughts and ideas contextualize our practice in a very meaningful way. Shireen, thank you very much.
I've been doing yoga for more than forty years now, and Shireen is among the two or three most creative and thoughtful teachers I've known in that time. She is completely present during her own classes - she herself is always learning something new, and she brings to her students her own curiosity and delight in the practice. Her classes are always safe and always fresh. With full attention to individual students, she introduces poses to complete beginners, and she devises sequences that enable experienced practitioners to re-discover familiar poses from new approaches. Her classes are somehow both grounding and uplifting.
One of the things I know about her teaching is that as her students we are in good hands. I can see that she herself is a student as well as a teacher, that yoga is a vocation her, a calling - which means that she has trusted her own teacher(s), allowed herself to be vulnerable because she feels seen and safe. And we feel safe and seen in return.
I have never liked yoga. I have always been embarrassed by my inflexibility, tight hamstrings. Shireen's class was the first yoga course that made me feel stretched and relaxed--not afraid and timid of my yoga abilities. She is amazingly attentive to people's postures and gracefully tells you when you need to shift positions and gently helps you do so. She is the best yoga teacher ever, she converted me into a believer and I have now been taking her classes every week for over a year.
I think the pace of your class is just right...challenging yet do-able. I feel worked after your classes and can even feel it the next day! I enjoy listening to everything that comes out of your mouth and like your choice of words. I like your rhythmic incorporation of breath with movement. I enjoy your choice of music. I like the way we finish class with an om. I could go on and on. I have been going to yoga classes on and off for half my life, in a number of states (and even in India). Yoga has really branched out these days, like 31 flavors of ice cream. I feel that you teach yoga with the intention of its true purpose.
I was very lucky to find you as my yoga teacher. Your smile, caring for your students and your way of instruction were very special. Yoga has been very helpful physically and psychologically for me, to calm me down and keep my body lively. It has been giving me energy and appreciation of my life. It was very helpful for me that you give detailed instruction: the position/angle of hands, legs and eyes to look.
I wanted to write and tell you again how much I enjoyed your class at Watertown yesterday. It was unusual for me to be free at that time and I'm so glad I was able to go to your class. As I mentioned, in addition to the smart sequencing and beautiful tone you set, I felt like you really held the space and gave me the feeling of being cared for through the practice. You seemed completely aware of what was going on in the room and for me, that sets the environment and safety to really dig in to my practice. Thank you.
I enjoyed speaking with you very much and hope to catch a class with you again sometime.
I have been taking classes with Shireen for a couple of years now, and they made a huge difference not only in my practice, but in my entire life. Shireen is an amazing instructor to experienced yogis as well as to first timers. She’s an amazing person - fun, caring and SO talented. With her help I started to understand what yoga is really about - what seemed like a weird sequence of awkward (and at times painful) poses before finally started to make sense. Every time I come out of the studio after the class my body and soul sing. And one more bonus from practicing with Shireen - at some point you will be caught by surprise by the fact that you actually know most of the yoga poses in sanskrit!
I started taking private yoga classes with Shireen a year after I had my baby. Shireen is very knowledgeable and thorough with her instructions, I feel a great sense of renewal after each yoga session, it wakes up my body and mind and sets me up for the day.
I enjoy your classes very much. I find it to be a great combination of physically challenging poses while still being very breath centered...I also want to thank you for the advice to focus on pressing into my fingers to take pressure off of my wrists. It definitely helps. I like when teachers walk around and make corrections or help deepen the stretches, so I love that that is something you do. I thought you might be interested to hear what I overhead in the stairwell from some of Dan's regular practitioners as well... They were commenting on your great energy and how it was nice to break a sweat and work harder than usual.
